1982年成立，创始人约翰·沃诺克和查尔斯·格什克，两人先前都曾任职于施乐公司的帕洛阿尔托研究中心，离开后组建了Adobe，二人的主要技术是postscript语言。
公司名称“Adobe”来自于加州洛思阿图斯的奥多比溪，这条河在公司原位于加州芒廷维尤的办公室不远处。
Adobe与Aldus、Apple组成的3A组合于1982年发起了桌面出版领域的革命，开发出桌面印前出版系统（DTP-Desktop Publishing），彻底改变了印刷领域的传统模式。
1985年和Apple公司，一起合出了LaserWriter，划时代意义。
